NHS hits the slopes

Making Noblesville High School’s first ever ski club a reality

With largely flat and flood-prone bottomlands, downhill skiing doesn’t come to mind when you think of Indiana. So how can a club like ski club exist in Noblesville where there’s barely a hill in sight, let alone any mountains?logo

Problem solved: Perfect North is a ski resort located in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. NHS skiers will only have to drive an hour and fifty minutes. Perfect North has 22 slopes, two terrain parks, two tubing carpets and free lessons to new skiers according to perfectnorth.com

The possibilities for extra curricular activities at NHS are endless. Seniors Mia Kerr and Hailey Barnes have started a this new club for people who love to ski and snowboard.

NHS social studies teacher and ski club sponsor Michael Rothrock says the group is an organization that has been assembled for the first time this year to provide students with the opportunity to ditch the corn and experience some snow. Kerr and Barnes helped to make this possible.

“We [Barnes and I] both have had a love for skiing for a very long time,” said Kerr. “We started talking about it and thought it would be even better if we could go with a ton of people who have the same love for skiing.

Another obstacle the club encountered wperfectnorth2 as the plans of founders Kerr and Barnes both plan to graduate early in December.

“It will be a little harder to run things from outside of school, but we can do it,” said Kerr.

Rothrock imagines that they will continue to help with some minor things, but the major details will be taken care of by the middle of November.

“We’ll come back for any meetings we have and go on all the trips with them,” Barnes said.

The club will hold a meeting every Friday in January to travel to Perfect North and ski for a few hours.

This extracurricular activity is open to any students wanting to join. They want as many people as possible, even if you don’t know how to ski. The cost is $190 for all the Perfect North fees and the transportation fees are to be determined.

“We hope to expand the club in the future to make it an overall outdoors club that can meet year round and do camping and hiking trips,” said Kerr.

Even with all odds being against ski club, Kerr, Barnes and Rothrock have managed to overcome every obstacle in their path and are ready to hit the slopes.perfectnorth3
