Is it the end of superheroes? Fans are sick of their childhood role models being portrayed in the same low quality stories. They want their superheroes back.
The production of superhero films have always fostered love from their audiences, but now audiences are sick of the same boring plot, moral simplicity, and worsening CGI.
It seems to be a time of non-stop productions from Marvel and DC. After “Avengers: Endgame” hit screens in 2019, Marvel released 14 live-action spin-off shows to drive fans to use Disney+. Audiences like sophomore Madison Sargent at NHS, is sick of the overproduction.
“I think that after (Endgame), they felt the need to start releasing things left and right so they could keep the audience interested. When they started to rush, these movies lost their quality and overall appeal,” Sargent said.
Stop with the Cliches!
Today’s generation is tired of the same basic repetitive plot in every recent superhero movie. Directors are too focused on the cliched plan of a big battle at the end, world-saving stakes and comedic one-liners than actual character development, relatable problems, and quality CGI. Marvel and DC need to consider what the audience wants more.
“Gen-Z doesn’t want to see another bad quality super hero movie. We want to see something brand new and exciting,” Sargent said.
Generation-Z wants relatable characters, interesting plots, and diversity. This is exemplified in the popularity of 2018’s Black Panther, audiences of all ages loved the movie for the heart-warming characters, high-quality filming making, and representation of black excellence.
“As diverse representation increases, we will be able to use films like ‘Black Panther and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ with mostly positive discussions of diversity,” Youth Institute writer Roslyn Hernandez said.
The Return of Hope
Since the 2024 film, “Deadpool and Wolverine”, Marvel has claimed they will slow down upcoming productions and DC is changing their production with a reboot. DC began working on 2025’s “Superman”, sparking love for the hope Superman had once embodied. The detail varied from color schemes to a political mirroring of today’s world.
According to Nucly magazine, “In an age of darker reimaginings, this design brings back the optimism and brightness that define the Man of Steel. The triadic harmony amplifies the poster’s energy, reminding us of Superman’s enduring place as a symbol of hope.”
Audiences are still hopeful Marvel and DC will work harder to create better productions.
“Thoughtful, intelligent superhero films will come in the form of brave steps forward for the genre,” “Far Out” magazine’s Calum Russel said. “And an admittance that things have indeed fatigued.”
