Paul Blart secures laughs with sequel

Leonardo Pilipis, Staff Writer

Overall, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 was a funny comedy and a decent movie. Despite the incredibly low, four percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this comedy did not fail to make me laugh. If you are looking for a good comedy, look no further than Paul Blart.
The plot is vaguely similar to the last, but is kept fresh for new coming fans. Maya Blart, played by Raini Rodriguez is taken captive by professional art thieves. Paul Blart, an underdog mall cop played by Kevin James, must save his daughter. After several makeshift weapons, awkward movements, faces, and situations, the movie ends with a victorious Blart.
In a world where mostly secret agents and veteran cops play the main role, having an unexpected hero adds more humor to the plot.
The humor, however, is centered around how pathetic Blart really is. His hypoglycemia, a condition best described by Blart himself, “If my sugar level drops, I drop.” is constantly ridiculed. I was not offended, but I can see how those with that condition would be. According to Rotten Tomatoes, Mall Cop 2 is “Bathed in flop sweat and bereft of purpose,” and “strings together fat-shaming humor and Segway sight gags with uniformly unfunny results.” Although valid, these reasons are not cause to heavily underrate a movie.
I give this movie a 7.5/10 because it made me laugh, therefore serving it’s purpose as a comedy. It was the same shallow humor as the first movie, but at the same time that is all it was meant to be. As the overweight, hypoglycemic, highly skilled mall cop once put it, “you can bet on Blart.
