Poetry slams NHS

Hayley Lipscomb, Staff Writer

Poetry influences many people to create and go for their dreams through poetry. With this being said, poetry has made an impact. Even several high schoolers at Noblesville High School enjoy the art form of poetry. This is one of the reasons NHS gives out the forms for the Hamilton East Public Library ‘s Teen Poetry Contest in the Teen Zone. Mr. Richards takes this opportunity and makes his students submit a piece of poetry. The contest  allows Mr. Richards students and other high schoolers to express themselves through their work and share it with others.
The Teen Poetry contest has been going on for several years and continues to become a tradition. The students of Noblesville High School are able to enter this contest by submitting a form and four copies of their poetry by April 1st. The types of poetry that can be submitted are limitless. It can range from poetry about divorces and hardship to love and everyday life.

“Poetry has helped kids the problems they were dealing with.” said Jane Bridges, one of the librarians at the Hamilton East Public Library. The winner is chosen by a few professional poetry writers and a reception, for the winning writer to read aloud their poetry, is held. The reception is May 3rd. The winner will receive a book about poetry and a Barnes and Noble gift card. However, even if you didn’t win the contest, the chance is still available to read your poem at the reception. This poetry contest for all types of writers, easy to join, and can help expressing your emotions when growing up and gaining maturity.
