Movies are a time to create memories with your friends and family, but like the characters in this movie, this may be a memory you want to forget.

The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, based on the book series and sequel to the novel The Maze Runner by James Dashner, shot up to the top box office movie the weekend of Friday the 18th, beating Black Mass by nearly 8 million dollars. However, the film disappointed many anxious fans.

The story follows Thomas, played by Dylan O’Brien, and a group of teenagers who are all immune to a disease that wiped out most of the world. This group of kids are put through a set of trials to test their physical strength.

After completing these tests, the teens are carried into a facility that they determine is too dangerous for them to stay in. The group finds that they must escape into the outside world where the dangerously diseased lurk in every corner.

The story mostly revolved around the gang hiding from both the infected and the science facility titled “World in Catastrophe Killzone Experiment Department,” or “WICKED” for short.

When the movie first started, I immediately had a few questions. The first question I had to ask was why would WICKED put the group in danger by dropping them off outside of the facility? This took away the surprise element of what happened to those who were infected with the disease later in the movie due to the infected chasing after them on their way inside. My second unanswered question was why was the facility in the location that it was? It was in the middle of a barren desert-like San Francisco with no other civilization in the immediate vicinity of it. They had little access to the resources that they needed to run the tests that they were doing, which would have been extremely inconvenient and a waste of already limited resources.

And though those questions were left unanswered, I think that the movie was adequate and kept me engaged the entire time. It had something in it for everyone whether like drama, action, romance or horror. It seemed that the filmmakers were trying to make WICKED the main aspect, but they seemed to use the infected people as an unnecessary plot element, almost as a filler to elongate the movie. To me, the diseased were the most interesting aspect that also brought in the horror element to the movie.

As far as the story line, there wasn’t much of it. It felt as though the group didn’t achieve anything from what they were doing and were in almost the same position they were when the movie began. They didn’t gain any knowledge other than what the infected had become and what wicked wanted them for. I think that the movie would have been better if they were not able to escape as easily and had more of a challenge trying to hide and get to where they needed to be.

Overall, I would give this movie a 2.5/5 stars. Even though the film kept me engaged and questioning what would happen next, there wasn’t anything to happen next for the most part. But, if you are looking for a movie to watch just for fun or one that keeps you interested, this would be the one to watch.
