Dodging for cancer
February 11, 2016
Screams echo across the gym. Teachers run from their students as they are pelted with dodgeballs. Is this a scene from Lord of the Flies? No, it’s the Students Against Cancer (SAC) club’s students versus teachers dodgeball game.
The tournament consisted of 96 student players, 10-15 SAC volunteers and 15 teachers. All profits from ticket sales and team registration went towards Noblesville’s Relay For Life organization.
“I think [the tournament] went really well,” club president Drew Bollenbacher said. “I’m glad to see the whole school get involved.”
The fundraiser collected quite a large chunk of money for cancer research.
“We ended up raising about $400 from this event.” Stephanie Fotiades-Troyer, SAC’s club sponsor said. “The best part is the money was pure profit. We did not incur any costs.”
Students battled it out in practice rounds during AL, then the winners moved on to the final teacher tournament in the main gym.
“It was a lot of fun to play against the students,” business teacher Caleb Small said. “Mrs. Fotiades has a great thing going here.”
SAC has been a NHS club for the past 4 years, raising money through a multitude of fundraisers and awareness events, including holding Zumba classes during AL, selling pink gloves for breast cancer and staging a breast cancer awareness dress-up week.
“I personally joined SAC because my family has been affected by cancer multiple times, and I decided to do something to help out and hopefully help others,” junior and club member Allison Anderson said.
