I scream for ice cream

Learn more about the history and atmosphere of one of Noblesville’s most popular ice cream spots: Alexander’s

If you’re wondering where you can find 36 different flavors of hand dipped ice cream and a large variety menu of food, Alexander’s, on the square in downtown Noblesville is the place. Alexander’s has been open for about 22 years now.

According to owner Cheryl Schulz, many people don’t know that Alexander’s actually started with a very limited menu of cold sandwiches. Even prior to cold sandwiches, the shop was Chew’s grocery store.

Alexander’s has come a long way and is mainly known for their ice cream today.

“The shop is named after Alexander’s Ragtime band.owner Schulz said.

From 1904-1911, Alexander’s Ragtime Band was one of the most popular white ragtime and jazz bands in New Orleans. Irving Berlin, an American composer, wrote a song called Alexander’s Ragtime Band. Berlin also wrote the classics, “God Bless America” and “White Christmas”.

It’s rare that Noblesville residents won’t bump into at least one person they know when entering the shop. That includes the workers. Alexander’s employee and NHS junior Lexie Burgess says that working at Alexander’s is a pretty cool experience overall.

“I’ve made some friendships with people that I never thought I’d meet or talk to otherwise,” Burgess said. “The atmosphere is just really laid back and fun.”

NHS junior Lachlyn Thompson and Alexander’s employee says that Alexander’s has a really happy and contagious vibe.

“Alexander’s in my eyes is a lot more unique than other ice cream businesses for a lot of reasons,” Thompson said. “There’s a lot of history in the building and it’s just a comfortable place to walk into.”

Alexander’s runs a second store located right off Morse Reservoir in Cicero. That location is open until November if the weather permits. The Noblesville location is open year round with slightly shorter hours in the winter.

Take a trip to Alexander’s to experience the contagious vibe that Thompson and many others talk so highly about.
