Whether through the kitchen, outdoors, or your local Starbucks pick up window, it is clear that autumn is making its annual arrival. And this year, just like in years past, students at NHS are looking to spend the last few months they can outside before winter creeps in.
Whether it’s to take a photo or go back to your roots, local farms are gearing up for fall and are waiting for— that’s right, it’s you. There is plenty to do in Central Indiana— you just have to find it. Not sure where to start? Here are three fan-favorite farms to get your memory-making and fall fun started.
A Hometown Classic — Local feel at Gatewood Farms
Are you looking for a classic, time-honored farm? With tried and true practices and a slightly less commercialized atmosphere, Gatewood Farms is the place for that hometown feel. Opened for more than 100 years and four generations, this timeless farm offers all your traditional fall favorites, including apple cider slushies that are sure to satisfy your autumn spice craving, and various homemade jams and jellies. Feel free to stop and look at the pumpkins, or talk to the owner— Bruce Gatewood, great grandson of Gatewood’s founder, and you’ll be sure to hear a story or two about life on this historic farm.
Located on 206th Street, the real charm of Gatewood Farms is the community grounding it. There is something for everyone at this local hotspot, and with the first chills of September, Gatewood becomes the talk of the town. Junior Roxie Eden agrees that Gatewood is perfect for ringing in autumn.
“I feel like fall doesn’t really start until I’ve gotten a slushy from Gatewood,” Eden said. “That’s just part of living in Noblesville.”
Floral Festivities — Blossom at Sweetpea’s Flower Farm
It’s homecoming season — and you’ll be needing a bouquet. Flowers might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of fall, but for florists, they’re a year-round activity, and they can be for you too. Find some orange, some yellow, and maybe even some red for the perfect centerpiece to your fall decor. Don’t know where to start? Don’t sweat it, because Sweetpea’s Flower Farm is a hidden treasure in Hamilton County.
Sweetpea’s has a beautiful flower booth that is both pre-potted and self-serve, meaning that it’s easy to drive by and pick up something wonderful. Sweetpea’s flowers are produced from over three acres of land and raised from the ground by farmers who love their craft just as much as they love sharing it with others. What’s better than locally grown and made with love?
This farm is ideal for the perfect bouquet for your date to the dance, or a nice pick-me-up when you need some fun scents and color in your life. Sweetpea’s Flower Farm will help ring in the season beautifully — albeit eclectically — giving you a scenic floral harvest to call home about.
An Aesthetic Acreage — Elegance at Spencer Farms
Searching for the perfect picture for your long overdue Instagram post? Finding that your senior pictures album is empty? Filled with winding paths and rows of twirling vines, Spencer Farms is the place to be. Visit this farm and you’ll find that it offers plenty of picture-taking opportunities, from charming barns to fields of luscious green produce.
Spencer Farms feels like a setting straight from a film scene, and who wouldn’t go for that? It’s a picture-perfect place to celebrate the beauty of autumn, while also making yourself look good. Ahead of the beauty by itself, the place is also filled with fresh produce, and beautiful baked goods that you won’t be able to resist taking home.
Most of all, the place is made of memories. Senior Chelsea Gee reflects on the farm fondly.
“It’s a really great spot,” Gee said. “I used to pick pumpkins with my family there.”
Try a pie, buy a new t-shirt, do whatever calls to you at Spencer Farms, but don’t forget to click that camera and make for the perfect recollection of a perfect day.
