It’s that time of the year again. Every high school senior across the United States is trying to figure out what to do for the rest of their lives. For many, the next step is going to college for a higher education. The only problem is that most students are unaware of what going to college entails.
In order to simplify the process, Kristen Hetzel, guidance counselor at Noblesville, has laid out 5 simple steps to follow during the difficult process.
- Research and visit colleges, and make a list of the colleges you are going to apply to. I also recommend making a spreadsheet and organizing the admissions criteria for each college (deadlines and the required parts of the application). Here is a spreadsheet we share with students to help them organize the colleges they are applying to.
- Complete and submit the actual application. Applications are usually completed through Common App or through the university’s own application, and links to both can be found on each college’s website. Applications may include an essay, so students should be prepared for this. Students should request their transcripts from their school counselor in Naviance.
- Students should request their transcripts from their school counselor in Naviance.
- If students are going to request a letter of recommendation, they need to talk to their recommender in person first. Then they can submit their request in Naviance or provide their recommender with submission instructions if they are not a teacher in the building.
- Submit test scores directly from CollegeBoard (SAT) or ACT if they are required or you are choosing to submit scores.
Applying to college can be a very difficult and confusing process. Following these steps can put you in the right direction and maximize your chances at success.
