Career fair builds experience

On April 17, NHS hosted a career fair to help students find employment. Businesses that offer internships through NHS were contacted to appear at the fair, and other companies heard about the fair through word of mouth. Businesses in attendance included Gaylor Electric, Helmer Scientific, Noblesville Parks & Recreation, Beck’s Hybrid, the Boys & Girls Club, Miller Consulting, Storage Solutions, and North Indy Fence, Deck & Rail.

A resume building workshop was provided prior to the fair on April 15. Counselor Kristin Hetzel was responsible for both the fair and workshop. She offered some tips for creating a professional resume.

“First, students need to make sure that all spelling and capitalization is correct,” Hetzel said. “If there are errors in a resume, I think that shows employers that you do not pay attention to detail and that you did not put much thought and effort into your resume.”

Learning to build a good resume is a life-long skill you will utilize when applying for jobs.

“I looked at my parents’, sister’s, and sister’s friends’ resumes to make [my resume],” said sophomore Saul Garza. “This has been a valuable learning experience, even if I don’t get hired.”

Some students have done small jobs in the past, but for many, the jobs offered at the career fair will be their first.

“I do babysitting and dog sitting and occasionally work at craft fairs,” said sophomore McKenna Pineau.

Overall, the career fair was a success.

“We did [the fair] so students would have the opportunity to network with different companies and gain experience in this kind of setting,” said Hetzel. “Quite a few companies have started to interview and even hire some students already.”
