An overcrowd of people causes the NHS Fashion Club to require applications for this school year

While the NHS Fashion Club is busy working on creating their first fashion show of the school year, over 100 students who were interested in being in the club watch the magic happen from afar.

After the immense amount of success that was achieved last year, the Fashion Club says they are proud to announce that they are back and better than before for the 2015- 2016 school year. But this time around, students were required to apply for a spot in the club.

“We asked everyone interested in the club to fill out an application to describe what they could contribute to the club,” Fashion Club president Emma Paris said.

Fewer than one-third of the 150 students who applied were accepted. This year, only 40 people are members of the club, half of the 80 members they had last year.

“Last semester was a nightmare,” Fashion Club Advisor Kate Butz said. “There just wasn’t enough jobs for everyone to be doing something. It wasn’t a dedication problem; I know lots of people were dedicated to the club. It’s just that when we met every week, by the end of the year, there were still people who I didn’t know their names.”

Last year, Butz and the eight officers decided that a smaller membership would benefit the students in the club. But as for the 100 or so students who didn’t make the cut, it didn’t benefit them at all.

“I was a little upset but not really. Most of the people who [got

accepted] are really good at makeup or something or are really good friends with the recruiters,” sophomore Madalyn Judah said. “Lots of people deserved to be in the club and are passionate about what they do.”

The application called for specific qualities that each person could contribute to the club. However, many people say they were interested but had no fashion experience.

“The fashion industry has always interested me and I wanted to build skills based on that,” sophomore Camille Zoe said. “I thought the people who got accepted were obviously what this club was looking for and I hope they were all qualified and excited about being accepted.”

Butz says that disappointment was bound to happen. However, nothing is set in stone.

“It’s possible that we could reevaluate for the second semester just to give everyone another opportunity to be a part of the club,” Butz said.

For now, the fashion club is working on getting ready for their first show of the school year.

“We have a lot of really exciting upcoming events that I think will be really fun for everyone in and out of the club,” Paris said. “Now we’ll be able to get a lot more work done and have everything run a lot more smoothly for everyone to enjoy.”

The Fashion Club says they have high expectations for their second year. However, with the limited space and time, only a few students will be able to strut their stuff on the catwalk.
